A PHENOMENAL STALLION While Gordon was fortunate to have many great horses in his life, one of the most influential was Clover Pinaroo, an outstanding athlete that became Valle Del Verde’s foundation sire.
Out of the mare Clover Pin Up by Clover Roo, the jet-black stallion had the looks and athletic prowess to make him one of the country’s most sought-after stallions, and spent his entire life by Gordon’s side. Gordon trained and showed Clover Pinaroo as a young horse, competing in a variety of events from reining and western pleasure to cutting and halter classes on the Central Queensland Show Circuit. The pair excelled, winning a variety of blue ribbons and honors. The stallion’s success boosted the notoriety of Valle Del Verde, and by late 1978, the prominent stud had a broodmare base of forty head.
When Gordon decided to leave to pursue a career as a clinician, Carl gave him Clover Pinaroo as a parting gift.
Out on his own, Gordon continued to stand the stallion at stud, producing talented prospects. Clinton remembers hearing about the stud long before he met Gordon, and got to work with his offspring during his apprenticeship. “I loved Clover Pinaroo’s offspring because they were really feely and sensitive horses,” Clinton says. “They weren’t hot or nervous horses, but at the same time, you couldn’t spur or jerk on them either because if you did, they’d leave town.” The consensus was that you either loved Clover Pinaroo’s get or hated them. “It just depended on how good of a horseman you were. If you were a bad horseman with heavy hands, you wouldn’t get along with them, but if you had good feel and timing, they’d be the greatest horses you’d ever ride,” Clinton says, and really liked the way the stallion stamped his progeny. Known not only for his disposition and athletic ability, but for his thick black mane and tail, Clinton says all Clover Pinaroo’s foals bore the same resemblance. “There was no mistaking a Clover Pinaroo foal because they all had the thickest manes and tails you could ever imagine,” Clinton shares. “And unlike other stallions, you could breed a bad-minded mare to him and you’d still end up with an average foal.
In fact, I never rode a horse out of him that was a poor ride. So you knew that if you bred a great mare to him, you’d get an outstanding foal.” That was exactly what Clinton was hoping for and got when he bred his mare Mindy to Gordon’s stallion. The first foal, Downunder Aussie Gal, was very athletic and trainable, but because Clinton was moving to the States, he sold her to a couple in Australia. The second foal, Jillaroo Doll, owned by Clinton today and known as Jillaroo by thousands of his fans, bears a striking resemblance to her sire and possesses the best qualities of both Mindy and Clover Pinaroo. Mindy was in foal with the now thirteen-year-old mare when Clinton flew her over to the States. Today, Jillaroo is Professional Clinician Shana Terry’s personal horse and has been to several tours, including the Vegas Tourcation last June. At the memorable event, Shana and Jillaroo performed at liberty both on the ground and bareback, highlighting many of the tricks the talented mare knows. Plans had been made for Gordon to attend the tour, but by that time he was falling ill and couldn’t make the trip over to the States. Knowing how much he was looking forward to the show, Clinton’s mother, Cheryl, had video producers cut a tape of Jillaroo’s performance for Gordon and sent to Australia for him. Gordon was pleased to see Jillaroo in action, and although Clover Pinaroo had been deceased for several years, there was no mistaking his likeness in his daughter. “He was just a phenomenal stallion. I always used to say that he could breed a hollow log and you were still guaranteed to get a better than average horse,” Clinton says. “I’d love to have another sire like him.
